Welcome to ThompsonChoirs blog site.
My name is Julie Kleinmaier. I am the director of the Thompson Choir program in Chicagoland . I teach adolescent singers to perform in ways that are enjoyable to themselves and their audiences.
In efforts to continue my education as a musician and teacher, I am currently taking a class at Vandercook College of Music to learn to communicate effectively with my students with technology. Creating a blog page is our first challenge.
Motivating a junior high school student to step out of their comfort zone in performance can be quite a challenge. I want to reach my students in ways that inspire them to be creative, explore new musical avenues, and above all sing.
I will have four choirs next year with nearly 250 students. The majority of my singers are female. My first step in reaching more male singers is to utilize cool forms of technology.
Do you have any suggestions for other ways to recruit and inspire more male singers?

Julie, 250 choir kids at Thompson? That is awesome! You must be doing great work there. (I went to Traughber for Jr. High) Dr. Rosenthal gave us a little bit of information about your grad project and the survey you gave for the boys in your school. I am totally intrigued and would love to hear what kind of results you got! I only teach up to 5th grade, but I've got to think that some of the answers you received would apply to my 5th grade boys, too...and if I can manage to keep 5th grade boys excited about music, I've got to think that they will be more likely to continue pursuing it in middle school. Let's chat sometime!
Julie, I'd like to hear your thoughts on male recruitment/retention as well. I look forward to seeing your project at the poster night.
